Trees in planters for Dokkum town centre
Commissioned by the municipality of Noardeast-Fryslân, Dokkum town centre has been temporarily greened with movable trees. Fifty-two trees have been placed in mobile planters throughout the centre as part of a comprehensive approach to enhance the quality of life and appearance of the public space.
A smart solution for the town centre
The historic town centre offers limited space for permanent greening. By opting for movable trees, visible and effective greening has nevertheless been achieved in the short term, without the need for major redevelopment. This approach makes it possible to create a rapid impact in a historic town centre with limited planting spaces.
From a temporary intervention to lasting value
The trees play a central role during King’s Day and the accompanying festive weekend, where they contribute to an atmospheric experience of the town. And that is important because the Royal Family is visiting the town in the year of their installation. After this period, the trees will remain in Dokkum for another year. They will then be planted in surrounding villages, thereby contributing to a broader spatial quality within the municipality.
Connection and identity
Each tree symbolises one of the villages within the municipality of Noardeast-Fryslân. In this way, the project not only creates physical greening but also strengthens the sense of connection and identity between the town and the region.
The addition of perennials at the base of the trees enhances the experience of greenery and contributes to biodiversity in the urban area. The project demonstrates how temporary measures can make a lasting contribution to a more attractive and healthier living environment.
